Congratulations, Mr. Peterson: Middle School Principal of the Year!

Alpine School District's Lakeridge Junior High School chief Garrick Peterson, 37, of Orem, is Middle School Principal of the Year. Peterson became the principal of Lakeridge Junior High in 2004. He says he went into education because he loves the kids' energy and "wants to make a difference in their lives."

Lakeridge Media Center Hosts: Battle of the Books

Starting Februrary 16, during Flex Time, the Media Center will be hosting "Battle of the Books." It is a college bowl type competition where teams of four students will compete against each other to answer knowledge of this year's battle books. Students sign up in the library as a team or individually (to be place on a team). There will be great prizes! The books for this year are:

  • Tom Sawyer
  • The Last Olympian
  • And Then There Were None
  • Uglies
  • A Child Called It
  • Hunger Games
  • Ella Enchanted

Crispen Anderson 2009 Utah Junior High School Teacher of the Year

Reality TownCrispen Anderson has received the 2009 Utah Junior High School Teacher of the Year at the UAAPHERD conference held at BYU. Crispen is in his 16th year of teaching health and PE, the last six of which have been at Lakeridge Junior High School. Crispen received this award for his original lesson ideas, leadership among his peers, and continous work in creating curriculum. Crispen knows how to make health interesting and fun. One of his favorite techniques is to use the students as props.

Sara Hacken Receives 25-year Service Award

What do you call a person who is a fireball of energy 24/7; reads the daily paper before school, after school and in between; teaches sixty gifted middle schoolers daily about contemporary issues that will affect their future lives; plans and organizes monthly trainings for hundreds of teachers who teach Utah History or U.S. History; and spends thousands of dollars weekly for materials for teachers’ classrooms to assist in bringing history alive for students? You would call her Sara Hacken.

Reality TownI was apprehensive many years ago as I stepped into the classroom for the very first time. I had just finished my course work at BYU and started student teaching with Scott Squire (Lakeridge Junior High) and Carl Ingersol (Mountain View High School). Both of these men were skilled mentors and teachers. It was their desire to help me become an effective instructor that contributed most to my success. Their efforts to share, listen, and work with me were a priceless gift.

PTSA Service Club

The PTSA Service Club has been working on a project during FLEX time to make teddy bears and stockings to send to our military serving overseas during the holiday season. Each student who made a bear also got to take one home.

National Junior Honor Society

Reality TownThe purpose of National Junior Honor Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire to render service, promote leadership, develop character, and encourage citizenship in the students of secondary schools. This year's officers are Kylie Guthrie, President; Hailey Liljenquist, President Elect; Kay Ann Rex and Allyse Shumway, Vice Presidents. Students who maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.8 or above, and exemplify the qualities listed above may apply for membership in January. Application forms will be available from Mrs. Hunter, Room 120, January 11th- January 29th. Applications are due February 12th—no exceptions. A special Induction Ceremony for new members will be held in March. Those students formerly inducted are still members and need not reapply until high school. Current members should watch the halls and listen to announcements concerning activities for the year. Questions may be referred to Mrs. Hunter, room 120.

Revised School Improvement Plan

Over the past year Lakeridge Junior High School faculty, staff, and community council have been preparing a revised school improvement plan. Our vehicle for accomplishing this task is the state accreditation process. The purpose of the accreditation process is to stimulate school growth and improvement so as to increase the quality of instruction and student achievement.

1st Annual Lakeridge Spelling Bee

Reality TownThe first annual Lakeridge Spelling Bee will be held on Tuesday, January 26 in the auditorium. The bee is open to any interested 7th and 8th graders who are currently attending Lakeridge. The school champion will receive a trophy and advance to the Utah Valley Regional Spelling Bee on March 27. The winner of the regional bee goes to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
FLEX activities will be offered to teach spelling
techniques and go over the practice lists. For more information contact Julie Gritton at julie@gritton.org.


Lakeridge Accreditation

Recently Lakeridge Junior High completed the accreditation process. The purpose of this process is to stimulate school growth and improvement by increasing the quality of instruction and student achievement. We have spent the last two years evaluating the many different areas of our school. We identified strengths and weaknesses and then created action plans that will help us to improve the areas of weakness during the next 6 years.
