Ginkgo biloba

Maidenhair Tree

This tree is a living fossil. It belongs to a group of plants called gymnosperms. The gymnosperms consist of three classes or groups of plants. These plants do not have flowers. Instead they produce their seeds in cones. The three classes are: Cycadae, Ginkgoae, and Coniferae. Different types of Ginkgo trees existed when the dinosaurs were roaming the earth. Now only this one species of Ginkgo remains. When comparing a fossil of an ancient Ginkgo with the Ginkgo of today you would say they are almost exactly identical. Hence the name "Living Fossil". This plant is native to South East China.

The leaves of the Ginkgo plant are very unique. The fan shaped leaf is a must see for those who enjoy interesting plants.

New growth on the Ginkgo tree will be light gray. The further down the trunk of the tree the darker and more deeply furrowed the bark gets. As trees mature and become old and stately the base of the tree can be dark gray.
